Is it just me? A Poll.

Last night, I had a business dinner at a popular steakhouse chain (here).  This particular restaurant is in a upscale part of town, surrounded by higher caliber shops. So when our party of six was sat, I was horrified when I noticed the two guys sitting at the next table were wearing baseball hats. I mean, I really thought I made a wrong turn and ended up in the building's break room. Their hats were pulled down in an "I'm a Hollywood star trying to avoid the paparazzi" kind of way... but these guys were no Hollywood stars.

So I ask you, dear reader, am I too old fashioned? Is wearing a hat in a decent restaurant acceptable today?

(BTW, I would have snapped a couple of photos of the guys, but I thought that would be just as off-putting as the flippin' hats.)

See Poll at right. The Poll has closed and the results are that 15 out of 15 voted for "Hell No - hats should not be worn in restaurants."  (I rest my case.)

  1. You have touched on one of my pet peeves, Derek.

Why would a man wear a hat indoors at night in any restaurant except perhaps at a sports bar?
Surely not to remain warm or to keep the sun off of one's face.

In my opinion, if a man removes his coat, he should also remove his hat.

It seems there are some men who never remove their hats. This is a true statement: Earlier this week, I observed a man in the men's locker room at my gym wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist, and yes, his hat; talk about looking ridiculous!

I suspect that for a handful of these offenders, it's a maladaptive coping mechanism for dealing with going bald.

  2. Very true. Thanks for your comment, "Anonymous". I would be curious how regionalized this offense is.

  3. I'm with you, no hats in a restaurant. I know my husband wouldn't do it.

  4. I would have taken a photo, and, if confronted, explained my reasons (and prepared for a fistfight).

  5. I believe it is a decline in the fashion sense of our country. Along with "advertisement wear" (those hideous polo shirts and jackets with corporate branding on the chest), your offense is one of the worst.

  6. As stated by Stanford Medical, It's really the ONLY reason women in this country get to live 10 years longer and weigh 42 pounds lighter than us.

(By the way, it has totally NOTHING to do with genetics or some secret diet and absolutely EVERYTHING about "how" they are eating.)

P.S, I said "HOW", and not "WHAT"...
