Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

"Take the Adventure, heed the call, now ere the irrevocable moment passes! Tis but a banging of the door behind you, a blithesome step forward, and you are out of the old life and into the new! Then someday, some day long hence, jog home... when the cup has been drained and the play has been played, and sit down by your quiet river with a store of goodly memories for company."   -  Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

The cabin (rented for "business") on Coeur d'Alene River

The view from the cabin

In the summertime, CdA is popular for golfing, fishing, and general boondoggling. Last week, this Cascadian prep did just that - golfed for pike and fished for golf balls. I've never been very good at either. Now boondoggling - there's something in which I have great skill.

Shorts Weather

Well, it is finally "shorts weather" in Greater Cascadia and after this l-o-n-g winter the shorts are riding higher than Bob Marley on horseback.  Shorts weather here also means sunglasses weather.  Sure, sunglasses for the bright sun, but more than that, sunglasses for the pasty white Cascadian skin that hasn't seen the light of day since mid September.

Cape Madras "Vail"  in (34) thank you very much

I can't wait to sport these babies while I tear up the golf course (literally), for the golf course is one of the few venues where a Cascadian prep can let out a sigh of relief.
"Phew! I'm not alone on this quest for prepdom in the Pacific Northwest," he thinks to himself when he sees some prepped-out golfers the next fairway over.
"Uh, yeah you are," he later thinks when he finds out, at the 19th hole, that those same golfers are in on business from Connecticut.

The Regrettable Sweatshirt Hoodie

Should Be Donned For Beach Bonfires Only!  To the degree that the sweatshirt hoodie possesses much needed functionality is the degree that it possesses major shortfalls in fashion. [Read "g'awful appearance" here.] "But the winds are constantly blowing and it's always a bit brisk at Pacific Northwest beaches," you say.

What is one to wear if one forgoes this hooded horror?

the author sends his deepest regrets

Some preferable alternatives follow:
  • a wool hat from Wapiti Woolies, a true Cascadian favorite, or
  • a custom wool hat from Vermont Originals, a true New England favorite. (See The Daily Prep posting here), or
  • a twill golf cap from one of your favorite links (as understated as possible).
Note Well:  Tongue is firmly planted in cheek whilst I write this. Because at the end of the day (literally), it is hard to take something as ridiculous as a hoodie too seriously. Scenes like this put things firmly in perspective.
